  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, and ground cloves. Stir in orange zest.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, then add orange juice and vanilla extract; mix until combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until incorporated.
  6. Drop tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden but centers remain soft.
  8. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For an extra citrus kick, sprinkle the cookies with a little coarse sugar and additional orange zest before baking.
