Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add olive oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing well each time until the dough pulls away from the sides.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased loaf pan.
  7. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes until it doubles again.
  8. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Remove from oven and let cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For a crustier loaf, place a pan of water in the oven while baking to create steam.
