French Toast Casserole

This French Toast Casserole is a delicious, easy-to-make breakfast dish featuring layers of custardy bread baked to golden perfection, perfect for family mornings or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf challah or brioche bread, cubed
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter, for greasing the baking dish
  • Maple syrup, for serving
  • Powdered sugar, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Place cubed bread in the prepared baking dish in an even layer.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, pressing down gently to help the bread absorb the custard.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight for best results.
  6. Remove the casserole from the fridge 20 minutes before baking.
  7. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  8. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with powdered sugar and serve with warm maple syrup.

Notes

For a richer flavor, add a handful of fresh berries or chopped nuts before baking, or serve with a dollop of whipped cream.
